The problem with the jobs debate in the USA and Europe is the the hidden question. How can an undereducated labor force compete in the World knowledge economy?

The skill levels of the population in the USA and Europe relative to the skill levels of the population of China and India is the real issue that dare not speak its name. Why? because it’s electoral suicide to tell unemployed and underemployed voters that they are too dumb to compete in the new World market for jobs. There is a reason that nearly half the senior engineers at Google are from India and It’s a fact that the Indian education system finds the smartest kids out of a 100 million and streams them into an elite. The results are the current and future leaders in the World knowledge economy. In a World where the smartest take the cake those who cannot compete get left on the shelf. Their communities begin to decline and the high street stores close .

How many high school students do you know that can speak fluent Chinese? Do mental calculus, score over 125 on the standard IQ test? Sad but true there are only a limited number of burgers that need flipping.

The Good news for Hollywood however is that the smartest creatives on the planet end up here.

Starbucks CEO Gets Serious

Howard Shultz, CEO of the Starbucks Corporation, has taken the current economic and political climate into his own hands. Shultz is urging fellow CEO’s and other business leaders to show their power by not donating any money to political campaigns until something is done about our growing deficit and unemployment rate. Demonstrating his determination, he has begun a global job creation endeavor with Starbucks. His goal is to provide both part-time and full-time jobs all over the world during this fiscal disaster. As Shultz said, ““This is a time for citizenship, not partisanship. It is a time for action.” He feels that if our leaders put themselves above the American people, we can fight back and do the same thing while creating more jobs in the meantime. Shultz’s winning idea for the American people and businesses to go on strike against Washington is a breath of fresh air. The response has been overwhelmingly positive from other business executives around the country to Shultz’s innovative idea. Maybe Washington will finally come up with a plan of action to dig our country and economy out of the mud. Tell us your thoughts

Richard Koo, chief economist for The Mighty Nomura , said in a recent letter to the Economist, “the profession has no clue as to what to do next”, in referring to Crash 2. In his erudite letter , which was proudly given first place in this weeks Economist, he points out that the tools for dealing with a “conventional” recession are useless for this new economic landscape. Mr Koo was a student of Japan’s stagflation from 1997-2007. He stated that early fiscal tightening in 1997 produced the “lost decade”, and that a similar response now by the USA and Euro leaders will lead to years of stagflation in the USA and Europe. What does this bode for Hollywood Hills property prices? Students of the 1930′s note that in a similar period of economic turmoil, the Hollywood movie and entertainment industry fared much better than other businesses. Could the same be said today? In addition, the proximity to the TV and movie studios has always been a prime factor for property values in the Hills. Many people in the entertainment industry believe that the Industry will be less effected by Market Crash 2 and that the value of property in the Hills should hold up pretty well in comparison to other markets. Ben Bernanke is a student of the 1930′s and knows all too well the perils of 1937, which for economic history buffs, is the second biggest crisis of The Great Depression. Whats does this bode for property prices? Simply put, the largest store of personal wealth in the economy. Just as increases in the VIX ( a measure of volatility) provide an indication for the immediate future, so a market correction has a ripple effect that will impact different areas in distinct ways. In some low lying areas it will feel like a Tsunami, and like the old stock market maxim, “you never know who is not wearing swimming trucks till the tide goes out”, many of the unprepared will suffer badly. The key for home sellers is to understand that pricing power has weakened. To continue the metaphor of the Tsunami, those on higher ground suffer less. In this instance, due to the limited Inventory ,the Hills can truly be considered ”higher ground” in comparison to now ( post crash 2) relatively overpriced properties of say the coastal enclaves of Newport beach and Malibu. In this new “normal”, the value for money in the Hills offers the buyer a better deal. Best not be at the beach during very large storms.

Standard economic theory assumes a market where all the buyers and sellers have perfect access to information . The real world, however, ain’t perfect and that’s where the interest of the seller is best served by those who can make the asset available to the widest set of buyers in the shortest possible time. Richard Neutra House Saved

The owners of Richard Neutra’s Kronish House in Beverly Hills have agreed to postpone its demolition to give preservationists the opportunity to devise a plan to save the historic residence. The Beverly Hills City Council asked the city’s Planning Commission to create a historic-preservation ordinance. This would be the first such ordinance for a city that has seen many architecturally important structures fall to demolition.

An attorney for Soda Partners, the partnership that bought the Modernist Kronish House, agreed to the postponement after a public discussion about historic preservation at a city council meeting. The home is almost 7,000 square feet and was one of the largest homes the renowned Midcentury architect designed. The house is in severe disrepair.

The owners’ plans to demolish it sparked an outcry in Beverly Hills and Mayor Barry Brucker and other council members acknowledged that a preservation ordinance was long overdue. Preservationists were overjoyed with the development. see all the houses here
